In an exclusive interview during the Congress, Adriana Moreira, Head of the Partnership Division at the Global Environment Facility (GEF), highlighted the significance of the Hima as a pioneering model of community-based conservation, noting its strong resemblance to traditional systems of protected areas in Latin America.

“It has been a true pleasure to take part in this Congress and to learn more about the Himas,” said Moreira. “The more I discover about these important conservation areas—traditionally protected and managed by local communities—the more I see their similarity to what we have in Latin America.”

She explained that, “In Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, we have similar systems—though they may go by different names. They are community-managed reserves, where people share responsibility for the land through agreed systems of governance and zoning. Communities decide which areas should remain intact for future generations, which can be used for agriculture, and which may be open for limited uses such as hunting or gathering.”

“These are, in essence,” she continued, “management plans for protected areas rooted in traditional knowledge and collective wisdom.”

Moreira emphasized the importance of recognizing this shared heritage and strengthening cross-regional learning:

“It is vital that we acknowledge the connection between Arabic traditions and those of Latin America and continue learning from one another. I am deeply grateful for this experience and for the opportunity to be part of this meaningful exchange.”

Her remarks underscore the GEF’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural cooperation and promoting community-based conservation as a cornerstone for sustainable development and biodiversity protection at both local and global levels.
